Most of us have felt at some point the urge to eat something sweet, an uncontrollable craving that drives us to seek out junk food, cookies, and ice cream. Many studies have shown that higher sugar, higher glycemic foods can be addictive and even though we don’t advocate for restrictive diets, it’s also not healthy to let these foods control you.
So where’s the middle ground? How can you find a balance? Every time you feel an uncontrollable urge to eat something sugary, choose foods with natural sugars that have a higher glycemic index so that you don’t feel deprived. These chocolate-covered peanut butter stuffed dates are ideal for soothing two of the most common cravings, chocolate, and sweets. If you’re only craving for sweets, you can stuff a date with peanut butter or almond butter and eat that instead.
Now the question is: “How long do you have to do this?”. Usually, sugar cravings last for about two weeks, so after that period you can introduce the occasional sugary treat back into your diet and restart a healthier relationship with food. Just make sure you’re always aware of why you’re eating certain foods. If it’s an obsessive behavior that has nothing to do with real hunger and is detrimental to your health and wellbeing, then it’s time to do something about it!
